ATU Ridin’ with Daniel Hernandez for Congress

May 12, 2025

Phoenix, Arizona – Recognizing his strong commitment to workers’ rights, transit, social justice, and equal rights for all, Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 1433-Phoenix, AZ, and the ATU International, the largest transit union in North America, are proudly endorsing former Arizona State Legislator Daniel Hernandez in the special election for Arizona’s 7th Congressional District.

“As a former State Legislator, Daniel Hernandez’s steadfast dedication to championing the needs of working people and their families has earned him the trust of the people in Arizona’s 7th Congressional District,” said ATU International President John Costa. “He has helped advance labor rights and consistently demonstrated a deep understanding of the challenges facing workers, including in public transit. “

Born and raised in Tucson, AZ, by his mother, an immigrant from Mexico, and his father, a construction worker, Hernandez was the first in his family to go to college. From 2012 to 2014, he was the Arizona director of Everytown for Gun Safety, advocating for gun violence prevention legislation. Then in 2017, Hernandez was elected to the Arizona State House, where he was a strong advocate for working people, transit, health care, LGBTQIA, and reproductive rights. He was a key champion of a bill that increased penalties for assaults on transit workers, which was eventually passed into law after he left the State House.

“A friend of the ATU, Daniel Hernandez, has consistently stood up for the interests and safety of transit workers, our passengers, and labor unions. ATU Local 1433-Phoenix, AZ, is proud to endorse Daniel Hernandez in this special election,” said Local 1433 President/Business Agent Bob Bean. “Our members across Phoenix will be mobilizing to send Hernandez to Congress.”
