Tucson, Arizona – Daniel Hernandez, a former School Board member and State Representative seeking the Democratic nomination for Congress in AZ-07, has been recognized as a Gun Sense Candidate by Moms Demand Action, a distinction given to candidates who have demonstrated a strong commitment to advocating for common-sense gun safety laws.
Gun violence continues to harm communities across Arizona. In an average year, 1,344 Arizonans die by guns, and the state has the 17th-highest rate of gun deaths in the country — 17.8 deaths per 100,000 people.
Hernandez has pledged to champion policies that include closing the gun show loophole and passing red flag laws that keep guns out of the hands of those who pose a danger to themselves and others. As a former state legislator and school board president, Hernandez has consistently advocated for public safety and evidence-based solutions to prevent gun violence.
Hernandez, a gun violence survivor and lifelong advocate for safer communities, issued the following statement:
“Gun violence has touched my life in the most personal way. I’m a survivor of the January 8, 2011 mass shooting, when a gunman opened fire outside a Tucson supermarket. That moment changed me forever. I made a promise to fight for safer communities. I’m honored to be recognized as a Gun Sense Candidate and will never stop pushing for policies that make our communities safer.”
